Welcome to my new photo site. It's obvious that most of these are of railways in the UK with occasional trips abroad. Since 2006 I have been digital ( Canon EOS30D), and prior to that usiing 35 mm slide (Kodachrome) or Black and White FP4. It's clear that some of these older photos were taken before I realised that you actually needed light to take a photo, but some of the better ones will make it onto this site - the remainder will remain confined to a very dark drawer.

I will be adding recent photos and also uploading the older ones perhaps the two sets will meet in the middle.

Mainline Steam - scanned slides : These are slides from the 80s onwards taken on 35mm Kodachrome 25,64 and 200 - with the occasional Ektachrome thrown in. In the earlier days it was case of trying to cram in as many shots as possible, involving hair raising driving and going out on days which today would keep me at home.

2006-2010 Mainline : I started photographing the mainline again when I moved to digital in 2006, when I had used my last precious Kodachrome 25 film. What a change compared to 8 years previously. Strange locomotives, palisade fencing, and tree growth - changing some locations dramatically.

East Lancashire Railway : My local preserved line, which I don't visit as often as I might do. It was about time for me to set up a gallery for the photos I've taken over the years. One of the biggest chages is the tree growth around Summerseat, making most of the views impossible now( so no apologies for including several older ones from Summerseat). This coupled with more restricted lineside access and the impending expansion of the caravan site at Burrs mean I will have to work harder to get the decent photos. (The preponderance of shots around the standard locations is obvious as I look back). More recent material is at the start of the gallery, with older scanned slides at the end.

80s in the southeast : These are all scanned slides taken in the 1980s (and a few from the early 90s). The majority are Kodakrome 64, with a few Ektachrome 200 thrown in Later ones are Kodachrome 25. Most were taken on a canon AE1 with the Ektachromes taken on a canon FTb ( which was basically a housebrick fitted with a lens- and pretty much indestructable). I was based in Welwyn Garden City for two years (1983-1985) and visited occasionally after then.

Leaning on the fence at Winwick : Winwick Junction is a popular spot, and easy for me between 1992 and 1998 as I could call in on my way home from work. 87s and 90s on the WCML expresses, pairs of 20s or 56s and laterly 60s on the Fiddlers Ferry coal trains as well as pairs of 37s on steel and 86s on container trains. A change in job in 1998 and all this ended until 2006 when another change in circumsatance meant I could again photograph at Winwick. The later photos are all filed under the year. These earlier photos are all scanned from 35 mm slides.

Dinorwic Quarry : The disused Dinorwic slate quarries dominate the landscape in Llanberis. After closure in 1968 many of the small locomotives which worked the quarry found new homes on the various narrow guage lines around the UK, bu tmuch of the equpiment was left in place (save for removal of copper, brass and lead) as the scrap value wasn't worth recovery. The CEGB took over the land to develop a pumped storage Hydro electric schem and many of the lower workings were tidied up, and lansdcaped. Even some of the upper levels have been heavily modified by construction of an access road, however for the adventurous and above all, careful, there is much to see, even from the public path which runs through the quarry. Quarry workings are dangerous places - especially where there has been no maintenance for nearly 50 years - you have been warned!!.

A Brush with Bosnia : At the end of January 2013 I visited Bosnia. Days two and three of the visit were part of a charter/tour organised by LoRie. On day one (31/01/2013) we visited the narrow gauge coal railway at Banovici/Oskava. A truly remarkable survivor, with a double track mainline, large 760mm gauge diesels and two 83 class 0-8-2s retained for shunting. Day two (01 February) was a mainline freight charter headed by one of the coal railways' class 33s ( which are the same as German class 52s or kriegsloks). Day three (03 february) started with a visit to the Dubrave mine ( more class 33) followed by a double headed steam charter on the Banovici line.
